The Rising Tide of Musculoskeletal Problems
Show Notes

On this episode, our guest Dr. Kyle Kiesel discusses musculoskeletal (MSK) health problems and their impact. MSK health problems are now the biggest overall expense for insurance companies. 50% of the U.S. adult population or 125 million people have an MSK problem today and data points to it becoming more prevalent.

Kyle is Program Director of Physical Therapy at the University of Evansville, a researcher, and an expert in low back pain.

During the first 10 minutes of the show, Kyle details his career path and his involvement early on with Gray Cook to help create the Functional Movement Screen.

Lee & Kyle discuss how inventing the movement screen may have been different if it had been done primarily in a research lab.

He explains the Thomas Test, how the idea of functional movement has become more mainstream over the years and gives some stats on musculoskeletal health problems.

After the break, they go deeper into MSK health problems and their effect on the healthcare industry.

We get into ACL injury prevention, fall prevention, and overall health indicators-- such as grip strength.

We close out the episode discussing why people get injured when starting exercise programs, and how figuring out your biggest movement problem can lead to success in your individualized fitness solutions.
